Background

Rationale

Study context and regional significance.

CT image guidance has become an increasingly visible adjunct in functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), particularly in anatomically complex disease, revision cases, and higher-risk skull base work.

Across a regional training network, access to this technology and the way it is incorporated into routine practice can vary substantially between hospitals. Those differences matter for patient pathways, service planning, and trainee exposure.

INTENT-01 is designed as the collaborative's first North London project. It will map the current regional landscape, describe patterns of use, and capture how trainees experience access to navigation-enabled FESS in day-to-day practice.

Why this matters

  • Establishes a baseline picture of regional practice.
  • Identifies variation in equipment access, theatre workflows, and training exposure.
  • Creates a platform for future quality-improvement work and collaborative publications.

Objectives

Primary aims

The questions the survey is intended to answer across the network.

  • Describe the availability of CT image guidance for FESS across participating North London ENT departments.
  • Characterise how surgical navigation is currently used in routine elective and complex sinonasal practice.
  • Capture trainee experience, confidence, and perceived barriers to accessing navigation-supported FESS.
  • Generate baseline regional data to support future collaborative audit, service evaluation, and interventional studies.

Participation

Eligibility and involvement

Participating sites will identify a local lead to coordinate survey completion and confirm departmental practice details.

Eligibility criteria

  • ENT trainees, trust grade doctors, and SAS doctors currently working in a member North London ENT department.
  • Clinicians able to provide site-level information on local access to navigation equipment and FESS workflow.
  • Participating units within the 10-member INTENT hospital network.

How to participate

  1. 1. Register your interest with the INTENT steering committee.
  2. 2. Confirm your hospital and collaborator role.
  3. 3. Receive the study pack and local survey instructions.
  4. 4. Submit site-level responses within the active data-collection window.
